About the project

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of Sri Chinmoy’s 13,000th song – Phukai Amara – his meditation students are embarking upon a project that was suggested by Sri Chinmoy to celebrate this momentous achievement: singing for a cumulative total of 13,000 hours.

The original project (1995)

On 17th July 1995, as he was approaching the end of his 13,000-song odyssey, Sri Chinmoy began speaking about this project, and he spoke and answered more questions about it in the following weeks. Among the guidelines he gave:

  • We can sing anywhere: at our shrines, in our living room, in parks, outside churches etc.
  • We can form singing groups; Sri Chinmoy said that the more separate groups there were, the better. If one person in a singing group did not know a song, the group should not sing that song.
  • Even if we don't know many songs, we can just sing those few songs every day.
  • Sri Chinmoy ended by saying the project was not compulsory, but if we joined, we had to be very devoted, very faithful and we should not drop out.

A logbook was printed that everyone could have, called The Heart-hunger-cry-Singers of the Master-Singer-Source. This is the foreword of that logbook:

“On 26 July 1995, Sri Chinmoy reached his goal of composing 13,000 original songs – a journey that spanned 31 years. To honour that momentous achievement, and to pay grateful tribute to his songs, a worldwide effort has been launched in which his students will sing these songs – both individually and in groups – for a cumulative total of 13,000 hours.”

“This log book is meant to serve as both an aid and an inspiration to the participating singer in recording hours sung. The log pages may be photocopied and submitted at the end of each month for inclusion in the overall hour count. Participants are asked to sing a minimum of three and one-half hours per week (or one-half hour per day). For maximum spiritual benefit, Sri Chinmoy has suggested that the singing be done most prayerfully and soulfully.” - August 1995

On July 29th, during the celebration of Sri Chinmoy’s 13,000th song, Sri Chinmoy composed a second version of Phukai Amara. He also offered a name to this 13,000th overall song: Phukai Amara: Victory’s Heart-Song, and then set music to this name in seven different versions.

Our goal (2025) - To sing for 13,000 hours by Sri Chinmoy’s Birthday on August 27, 1995.

  • The project will officially start on July 14 2025, but you are welcome to join at any point.
  • You can sing by yourself and/or as part of a group. If you sing as part of a group (which Sri Chinmoy definitely encouraged!) it is each singer’s individual hours that count towards the total.
  • You can send scans/pictures of your logbook at any time, or above you can enter your name and the hours you have sung so far. (Feel free to visit as often as you want and update your hours, as long as you always enter the total hours sung since you started.)
  • The project ends when we have completed the 13,000 hours of singing. Please keep submitting your hours right up until August 25th, as long as we haven’t reached the goal.

All those who participate in this project are welcome to join our 13,000th song celebration performance on August 27th, 2025, in New York. We will be singing both versions of Phukai Amara, In the Battlefield of Life (the English version of Phukai Amara), and all 7 versions of Victory’s Heart-Song.
